Thinshell…the new over 35-year old greener evolutionary world-wide building technology. It starts with modified light gauge metal framing to connect with thin exterior concrete to form precast, sitecast walls, floors and roofs. Sitecast walls become a lighter, simpler, stronger, cheaper form of tilt-up. Offsite precast panels are lifted from trailers and set in place. SteelCrete has developed new patent pending cast in place Thinshell.
Thinshell architectural precast concrete provides an unprecented, innovative method of enclosing space unparalleled in the AEC industry. Walls that compete directly with CMU Concrete Block, Tilt-Up and all other forms of building envelopes, Thinshell is cutting a widening swath through all other building technology that includes (SIPS) Sandwich Panels, ICF systems, Foam Embedded Lath and Metal Panels, as well as interesting, resourceful and obsolete wall methods that includes conventional metal or wood framing with any substrate with exterior and interior finishes.
SteelCrete is a Thinshell industry leader with a most imitated product line in a field of approximately 30 providers who market specialty roll-formed metal framing, and attachments to conventional metal framing for embedment. Precasters furnish and install thinshell panels or contractors perform on the jobsite as a subcontractor. The end result is about the same…usually walls that cost less, lift & install sooner and create a faster envelope, use lighter equipment, smaller footings, pour-back strip elimination, are more architecturally flexible, Insulative without furring, with utilities (electrical, plumbing etc) conventionally installed.

SteelCrete products may be used to provide a building's entire enclosure with the walls serving in a load bearing capacity; or as curtain wall components in conjunction with a structural frame. In either case the floors and roof may also be constructed of SteelCrete product or of more conventional systems. How everything is to be assembled is up to the designer, but SteelCrete products are simpler, faster, and more economical. Virtually any floor or roof system may be seamlessly integrated into the enclosure system. Components may be produced onsite (tilt-up style) or offsite by a precaster. Once the lightweight panels are installed, all other work is done conventionally including electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, insulation, drywall, doors, windows etc. The floor, roof or wall panels may be designed with any arrangement of stud sizes, gauges and spacing to accommodate different load requirements. This gives the architect or engineer flexibility in designing for efficiency.

The MetalCrete strip is SteelCrete's earlier technology using a labor-intensive screwed on strip, but SteelCrete outstrips that with the new SteelCrete III strip that snaps in place from behind the flange and rebar can be passed through for the strongest embedment in the industry. The required wire mesh reinforcing can be tied directly to this rebar or heavy gauge wire prior to pour.

Hi-Tech Tilt is SteelCrete I (SCI) renamed. Tabs are punched in standard metal framing at 6" o/c for the original SteelCrete patent. A later version places these tabs at 4" o/c and is patent pending by SteelCrete, who continues to market this product without cumbersome and expensive license fees, royalty payments or other added costs while all services are provided. Architecture, Structural Engineering, Technology Transfer, Technical Support, Supervision, Estimating Support, Spec Writing including other services and support options provided on a fee basis.

The Lineup:
SC I aka SteelCrete I aka Hi Tech Tilt is the first generation U.S. patented but now obsolete product with shear tabs @ 6" o/c that have been replaced by SC II and cannot be patented in Mexico or in any other foreign countries
SC II is the newer generation patent pending design with shear tabs at 4" o/c
SC III is the newest generation Thinshell with U.S. and Mexican patents and other foreign patents pending

SteelCrete II is currently produced in Los Angeles CA, Laredo TX, Las Vegas NV, Yalova Turkey, Iran, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, China and Nigeria. Punched studs are shipped to precasters and jobsites.

SteelCrete III is currently produced in Laredo TX but Los Angeles tooling is in process to fabricate the strip product, and the other market areas are also tooling up Separate tooling is used to punch the flange slot receptors, and can be sold to precasters and contractors who can buy local metal studs and track, punch their slots on site and insert the strips shipped to them by SteelCrete.

All Thinshell building systems use straightforward structural engineering principles to demonstrate structural worthiness and use of world-wide standards and requirements for building permits worldwide. SteelCrete and the CSI collaborated to establish the Master Format for Thinshell as 03 48 33 Precast Pre-Framed Concrete Panels. SteelCrete assisted MetalCrete in its obtaining a now expired 1994 ICBO Evaluation Report (ER 5440) that some Building Officials may rely on in some instances if they still use the now obsolete ICBO and in spite of the ICC's invalidation of this report.

SteelCrete products and systems are easy to teach and learn, which allows for the rapid, inexpensive erection of buildings designed to use them. They are anything but High Tech, and is faster, far stronger and most competitive Thinshell systems currently available, requiring less skilled labor and quality control than others. Concrete is the least common denominator between Thinshell systems. Some like it hot, other like it not but one thing is common to all: Concrete that weights less, costs less and is much stronger than conventional hard rock concrete. There is a wide selection of hybrid and synthetic concrete but none of them include all 3 desirable characteristics. Some use microscopic glass beads, others use something akin to shaving cream while others use additives. But none of them have the only concrete product that weighs and costs less while much stronger…except SteelCrete.

In Summary…
The chemical bond that forms between galvanized metal and concrete has long been proven and validated. The two become as one, with metal's tensile characteristics and concrete's compression properties working together to form an assembly where The Whole is Stronger than the Sum of its Parts. There are a number of individuals and entities in this field with widely different means of doing business. Some use modified metal studs that have to be shipped to the user, while others use a metal piece that's added to common studs & track to make the connection. Others don't even use metal at all, but foam that serves to form monolithic concrete studs and track. But the best, most adaptable method of all remains Thinshell in its many "forms". While a rose may be the same by any other name, Thinshell is the name that has stuck over several others such as "studcast" and remains the system to beat as evidenced by the growing number, type and size projects now throughout the world.

All Thinshell systems are Green, with one no greener than the other. All are environmentally friendly whose resources substitute junk yards for acres of forestry in one building.
